Zip 100 Parallel takes > 1 minute to unprotect

I just installed a Zip 100 parallel port drive on a new Gateway computer
running Windows XP. The drive had been running properly on a W98 computer,
where, when I would insert a protected disk, in a few seconds an unprotect
dialog would appear. But under XP the unprotect dialog never appears. If I
right click on the drive icon, it takes typically 76 seconds to get to the
screen where I can select unprotection. Then about another minute after
entering the password before I can access the drive. I tried disabling the
McAfee firewall as was recommended in another message, but it had no effect.
Any suggestions?

Do you have a lot of ram ?

Is your virus checker looking at the files during the 76 seconds ?
