Discussion:
Using parallel ZIP 100 slows down my computer
(too old to reply)

Hello,

I've attached an old ZIP drive to my Dell Windows 2000 based machine. The
machine boots OK with the drive attached, however when I insert a disk into
the drive, the computer grinds down to a halt. I've searched around on the
newsgroups, and tried doing the following:
- use the Windows 2000 native drivers, after having read that the IOWare
software is no good
- modify the parallel port mode in the BIOS to EPP
- install the "Parallel port slow transfer" patch from Iomega
Needless to say, none of these helped!

When I insert the disk into the drive, the disk starts to spin and never
stops, whereas with Win98, it used to spin for a second or so, and then
stop.

Can anyone help me?

There is very little that can be done about the speed issue. It was
present in Windows NT that had preceded Windows 2000 and the OS's
that were derived from Windows NT are totally different from the way
they manage hardware utilization. Essentially, the slow speed is
probably due to the need to do the data transfers through on-the-fly
emulation to the parallel port. Might have been better off with a
SCSI ZIP drive or an ATAPI-IDE ZIP drive. The Windows 2000 "native"
drivers apply principally to the ATAPI-IDE drives and IOWare 3.11
works very well...again with the SCSI or ATAPI-IDE products.

I've had a lot of problems with my parallel 100MB zipdrive under Win2k pro
SP3.
Recently I did a re-install of Win2k pro and updated to SP4 and this solved
all zipdrive problems.
Do NOT install anything from Iomega!! It's trash.
Win2k has the right driver, you only have to check the parallel port
settings: ECP - printerport LPT1 - use any interupt assigned - search old
plug and play devices.
I have it on parallel port together with 2 printers (through a parallel
switch). It works fine since SP4.
Check to have parallel port in BIOS set to ECP.
