computer doesn't recognize zip disk

I have a Zip 100 parallel drive. I bought it on eBay, but it appears to
be unused, i.e. it came in the orignal box with all the accessories.
I'm running Windows XP and Iomega software version 4.0.2.7 The
computer recognizes the drive and tells me it's working normally. But,
when I click on the Iomega icon, I get a prompt to install a disk. This
occurs even if there is a disk in the drive. If I install, or
reinstall, a disk, the amber light flashes and the drive clicks twice.
I still get an "install disk" prompt. I tried several Iomega brand
disks and I get the same response. What is the problem. Thanks in
advance.

Hmmm, insert the disk in the drive and go into my computer and right
click on the zip drive icon and choose format from the menu. XP
does not like Win95 formatted zip disks it seems.

If that does not work, then reply back.

First, I would to thank you for your assistance. When I try to format a
disk, I'm told that the disk is unusable. Howerver, the disk works fine
on a PC with an internal Zip250 drive running Windows 2000
Professional. I can also eject the disk from the desktop on my machine
even though I'm told there is no disk in the drive.

Wow, you sure have a unique computer ! *smiles*

I have never seen a zip drive act this way, but we can try one
more thing. Download this registry cleaner and check it for
viruses and then back up your registry to floppy and then run the
cleaner then remove whatever the cleaner says to remove, then restart
the computer. That is what I do when have no clue what is
wrong with my computer. (^:

RegCleaner.exe is located halfway down the above webpage.
It is on the left hand side. 530k is a nice small size and
quick to download even on dialup speed.

Reply back if that doesn't work.

Your original hunch was that I had a problem WinXP. I storngly suspect
that this may be the case. On the one hand, I'm told that there is no
disk in the drive. On the other hand, I'm told that this non-existant
disk cannot be formatted and that it can be ejected with a command from
the desktop. That the disk is recognized in some circumstances, but not
in others doesn't sound like something in the computer itself.

Have you heard the theory that Bill Gates is the anti-christ. Evidently
if you add up the ASCII values of the letters in William Henry Gates
you get 663. Since he is William Henry Gates 3rd, you add three and
get 666, the number of the beast. I found it on the internet, so it
must be true:)

When I go to "device manager" the drive is described as IMG VP!. I
usually activate the drive before I turn on the computer. The drive is
letter E. Yes, I have restarted the computer. I don't remember what the
previous owner said. I bought the drive some months ago, and, as is
typical for me, never quite got around to installing it:( But it came
in the orignal box, with all the accessories, even the two piece egg
box packing box. My understanding was that it had never been used. The
disks are definitely 100 mb. I don't know anything about the drivers.
Thanks again.

Hi,

I found one mention of "IMG VP" and it said that IMG stands for Iomega
so I guess it is a legetimate label. And for fun, we will say that VP
stands for Very Picky. *smile*

If the zip drive has no scratches on it, it might never have been
used. However there is a tiny chance that it was refurbished, but
hopefully not.

That is wonderful news that the disks are indeed 100MB disks. Glad
you restarted your computer. Doing that has often solved many of my
error messages. (^:

I turned off the computer, restarted it, and immediately turned on the
zip drive. It doesn't help.

I can only think of two things to check on:

(1) In device manager, check the properties of the parallel port you have
installed your Zip drive on. "Legacy device" (or similar) should be checked
for proper functionality.

If still not working:

(2) Check your BIOS CMOS settings and configure the port to run as either
EPP, ECP or EPP/ECP.

Hi,
Looks like you have the correct software version. (^: That's good.
Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Hardware Tab/Device Manager/
then click the + mark next to "Disk Drives" Do you have a "IOMEGA
ZIP 100" listed there ?
There is a known problem with XP recognizing floppies that were
formatted with a lesser OS. Are these zip disks from an older computer
? Are the disks Mac disks perhaps ? The key is to full format your
blank zips with XP.
I wonder..... you might have a bad desktop shortcut ? (hunch) I have
seen lots of "install a disk" error boxes for huge variety of
software and hardware issues. Try deleting that one and make a new
one.
Hmmmm, did you download the drivers from the net ? They could be
corrupted or didn't install properly ? I personally don't use the
Iomega drivers and just use the XP drivers that came with XP. If
all else fails, then you might try deleting the Iomega drivers
and see if you can use the zip drive without them.
I wonder if your BIOS settings could be preventing your zip drive
from working properly....
What drive letter is the zip drive ?
Did the previous owner say it had been working recently ?
Have you restarted the computer since installing the drive ?
Iomega recommends connecting the computer, your Zip drive, and your
printer to a power strip, and using the switch on the power strip to
turn all three devices on and off at the same time. If you do not use
a power strip, power on the computer first, then turn on your printer
and immediately connect power to the Zip drive. Power must be applied
to the Zip drive before your operating system begins to load.
Does the power supply say Iomega on it ?
Did it come with manuals ? If not, then here is the manual.
http://www.iomega.com/support/manuals/zip1p/home.html
If you have the external zip drive and you want to install it with a
http://www.iomega.com/support/manuals/zip1p/z100ppt.pdf
With XP, the zip disks should be ejected with software and not
the eject button on the front of the drive. I right click on the
zip disk icon in my computer and choose "eject".
Lastly, make sure the zip disks are in fact 100 mb disks and not
250 or 750 ones with the sticker covering something ?

Normal behavior would be a quick two-part click. Is this what is
happening? Or are you getting two of these quick two-part clicks? If
it's the latter, then there is probably something wrong with either
the drive or its power supply.

The Zip drive should work under XP, and there should not be any
formatting issues discussed elsewhere in this thread.
