Help sought with faulty Iomega 2 GB Jaz drive
(too old to reply)

I daily back-up my business data to an external Iomega 2 GB Jaz drive.

Suddenly the drive works only momentarily and then just keeps on
spinning (yellow light) as if to look for data.

Thinking that the cartridge developed a fault, I purchased a new on at
$184.50 and found that the same happens to that to. So the drive must be
faulty?

Hopefully there is someone in the MPC group familiar with the external
Iomega 2 GB Jaz drive and able to advise me of what to do.

Is there a service centre in Australia - Melbourne that repairs Jaz
drives or would you know of someone skilled enough to repair? (That is
if the can be repaired?)

Any advice/help would be tremendously appreciated.

Assuming a SCSI drive have you removed and reseated the cables?

If you are running Win 9.x or higher head to http://www.grc.com and look
through the click death section on Iomega drives. Download the free
diagnostic and see what it reports on the disk status. High error
counts, and/or "hard" errors being reported most likely means the drive
has gone defective.

If repeated attempts at a long format fails, especially near the 1/3
point, it most likely means one of the write heads is no longer working
properly. Of course, a long format will kill any data on the disk so
only do this with a disk that does not have important info.

The drives can't be repaired. Iomega does not repair, sell parts like
head assemblies, nor authorize anyone to perform repairs on their
merchandise. (At best Iomega swaps out head assemblies and entire
circuit boards.) As the drives have been long discontinued getting a
replacement (refurbished) drive from Iomega may not be possible.
