Win2kXP Parallel Port Slow Transfer Patch (Driver 4.0.3)
(too old to reply)

Hello,

is there still somebody out there using a parallel port
Iomega Zip drive on a Win2k or WinXP system?

I used to have this combination and though it worked in
principle, sometimes Windows hung while trying to access
a Zip disk - and then after a short while continued working
normally.

As my parallel port Zip drive is conferred currently, I
can't test myself whether the following patch (which actually
seems to be just the most current driver version) does help
or not:

Parallel Port Slow Transfer Patch, Version 4.0.3
ftp://download.iomega.com/english/iodrv-w2kxp-x86-403.exe

Anybody has tried it and can comment on this?

Ciao,
Martin

I use an Iomega Zip250 with Windows XP Home SP1. I had so many problems
that I uninstalled all the Iomegaware and just use the default Windows
driver instead. I can't use 250Mb disks (the drive refused to read
them, anyway) and everything is fine now.

Just a note, to my best knowledge the file above is not IomegaWare
with all the bells and whistles that might cause problems, but the
plain hardware driver. The driver included with Windows is not by
Mirosoft either but by Iomega, just an older version of the one above.

I've had a lot of problems with my parallel 100MB zipdrive under Win2k pro
SP3.
Recently I did a re-install of Win2k pro and updated to SP4 and this solved
all zipdrive problems.
Do NOT install anything from Iomega!! It's trash.
Win2k has the right driver, you only have to check the parallel port
settings: ECP - printerport LPT1 - use any interupt assigned - search old
plug and play devices.
I have it on parallel port together with 2 printers (through a parallel
switch). It works fine since SP4.
Check to have parallel port in BIOS set to ECP.

Thanks a lot - that's valuable information.

Check to have parallel port in BIOS set to ECP.
AFAIK the EPP mode used to be slightly faster than ECP
due to faster mode changes (from writing to reading and
vice versa).

But as always: never change a running system :-)

Can someone explain to me exactly what the problems are? I've been
using parallel port drives under WinXP with various versions of
the Iomega software, more or less since WinXP came out, and have
never had any trouble.

Some users experienced problems with Win2k and a parallel port Zip
drive:
- either it crashed Windows completely, and couldn't get working
at all
- or it worked in principle, but system hang when accessing media,
sometimes recovering - runs - hangs - runs - hangs...

Just google for older threads, there are several ones like

Oh right - none of those problems here thankfully.
