XP System Backup & Restore

I know I can back up my entire XP system to 2GB jaz drives -- it's currently
about 3.5Gb, so I'll need to span over two discs.

The plan is to swap my hard drive for a larger unit, then restore. Can I
restore my system from the Jaz without first installing Windows XP?

wouldn't it be easier/safer to simply install the new drive with the old drive
still hooked up and copy/move what you need and then remove the old drive?

Can't do that, it's a laptop with a single drive bay.

You can buy a USB or PCMCIA enclosure for attaching a new drive to a laptop.
