Parallel Zip 100 drive letter

When I boot Win 98SE, the Zip drive (empty) is set at M:, between L: (SCSI
CDRW) and O: (IDE CDR) - not sure why it's there, not a conscious choice
of mine. Insert a Zip disk and it works fine.
When I re-boot with Zip disk in the drive, the drive letter skips up as
D:, resulting difficulty in accessing programs on the former E: drive, now
F:
I installed the latest Ioware (ioware-w32-x86-402.exe) that promised (as
did my earlier version) to let me set the drive letter. I found that this
worked on an earlier installation - maybe it was Win 95 - but I set it to
Z:, but it has no effect.
The only variable I can think of is the master/slave settings on the IDE
channel, but before I open the case and start interfering, I'd welcome
comments.

It sounds like your system BIOS is trying to control your Zip drive as
a fixed hard drive. Tell the BIOS that you have nothing connected
where the Zip is installed (or if there is a Zip-specific setting, you
could try that, but don't use the Auto setting).
