I have 3 Jaz Drives at home. all 2Gb. When I long format disks it kills
them. I managed to kill 3 disks while testing my good disks on each drive!
I read on usenet that this is a known issue. I was all set to send them
into iomega which I got RMA's for when I decided to try one last thing. At
work I have a external Jaz 2Gb with E.16 firmware and I tried to long format
and to my shock I got my dead disks working again! But my drives at home
which are E.16 and E.17 firmware kill disks every time on long formats. So
whats the latest info on this ordeal? Iomega refuses to acnowledge there is
a problem with the Jaz.

I was once told by an Iomega representative that there was a known
potential problem related to long formatting with firmware revisions
prior to E.17, but I don't know what triggers that problem.

It sounds like your drives at home are not in very good condition. A
long format is a rather demanding task for a drive to perform, and if
it isn't working very well, the problems are likely to surface at that
time. You could try TIP from http://www.grc.com/tip/clickdeath.htm.
It shouldn't kill your disks, and it may reveal something about their
condition.

I just killed a couple myself. How can I get the E.16 firmware to
resurrect them? The rep I talked to today said that she could not
replace them unless I could present a proof of purchase. I bought them
on E-Bay so I don't have such a thing.
