I am looking for some sotware to allow me to extract the data from my
Iomega Ditto Easy 800
tapes. At one time I did a multi tape backup and kept only two tapes..
When I do a catalog rebuilt or retrive, I can see the data I want. When
I try to recover, I am asked for tape 1, which of course is
not around.

Is there some utilities around (free ) that will let me pull the info
off the tapes?

Nothing I'm aware of. Out of context of the original backup software
it gets complicated to dump the contents of the tape, deal with any
compression used in the backup and restore the file and/or directory
structure. There's nothing free out there to do it and data recovery
places are expensive. It can also come down to the data you are
looking for may cross that tape 1 boundary as well. Without a copy
of the backup report having been saved *if* you selected to list all
files in the report, it's hard to tell what range of files end on
one tape and begin on the next. Without tape 1 to read the start
date & time of the backup, compression applied to the backup set -
if any, and then compare that info against the catalog, the restore
process gets lost. The catalog stored on the last tape in the backup
set is only part of the story.
