If you refer to Steve Gibson's site, you will see the answers to your
questions, and answers as to how and why your drive might have died, if it
truely is the 'click of death', i suggest you research more before you rant
online.

I've had a Zip100 drive for a few years now. It's making the click of
death, but other than a few extra clicks while accessing some disks, it's
never caused any problems and I've never lost any data.
Anyway, about a year ago, I unplugged the drive to move some stuff around
and when I plugged it back in, both lights came on and the drive didn't
respond. I tried it with a friend's power supply and it worked fine, so I
bought a new power supply off eBay. This morning, the power company turned
off the electricity in this area for some maintenance. I forgot to unplug
the Zip drive, and when the power came back on, both lights on the drive
lit up and it started making a click about 3-4 seconds. I've tried both
power supplies and both do the same thing. Based on my experience with the
first power supply, I'm not sure unplugging it would have done any good.
Does(did) IOMEGA make their power supplies disposable? I've now had an
interruption in power kill two of them on me. Or maybe it's the drive this
time, although I tend to think not.
How does IOMEGA stay in business? They make drives that have a very
common
and widely known defect which they refused to fix, and now it appears that
their power supplies die at the slightest provocation.
I'm starting to regret ever buying a zip drive, but at the time it was
the
only mass storage device that was easy to hook up to my Amiga.

I think Steve makes it pretty clear that the current products are garbage
and getting worse with every product release.
