Hi,

Does anybody know if you can use a different (non iomega) power supply with
a zip 100 drive and if so what type?

Cheers

You can. But it has to be 5 volts and deliver at least 1 amp of
current. If you try to buy anything with that capacity at a place
like Radio Shack it will cost more than just buying a replacement
from Iomega. Underpowering the drive with a low current cheapo
supply will result in the drive not working properly and frying the
power supply as well.

Yeah thanks rick I did try a cheapo supply with only 350Ma output jut to see
if it worked and the orange light stayed on the front of my zip drive I was
thinking that it would explode under heavy usage as the drive states 1 amp
required.

I have been having a look around using the proper values, I have found some
around half the price of the 'official' iomega ones I am in England (the usa
ones look reasonably priced, shame), but the power supplies I have been
looking at seem to vary between regulated and unregulated do you know which
one the drive needs?

cheers

Definitely regulated. (The Iomega unit is.) Internally, there is nothing in the
drive to regulate voltage. The voltage output on unregulated supplies can vary
too much under load for computer equipment.

Some people have reported in here that they got by with 4.5v supply if a true 5v
unit isn't available. Going over voltage to a 6v model probably isn't a good
idea. Don't forget to check the polarity of the DC plug on the supply you are
looking at.

Thanks Rick thats really helpfull and will hopefully avoid any smoke in my
testing trials

Thanks Again
