Discussion:
Is my 1Gb external Jaz drive dead?
(too old to reply)

My 1Gb external 1Gb Jaz drive (SCSI) has just been powered up for the
first time in ages but it doesn't seem to do anything when a disc is
inserted. The green light just flickers constantly. The drive doesn't
seem to respond in any way to the disc insertion. Once a disc is
inserted it cannot be ejected - I have to use the pin-hole method.

I've set SCSI termination to \"on\" (it was previously \"off\") but
this doesn't appear to have made any difference. Is the drive now
useless?

Is the light flickering even before you insert a disk?

The power supply may be bad. Or I suppose it could be the drive, but
it does sound like something is defective.

Try disconnecting the SCSI cable from the drive just to rule out some
strange problem with the cable or SCSI controller . I think the drive
should accept disks normally with no cable connected.

Yes it is

Yes I'd already tried that - made no difference. Since the power
supply looks like it has a proprietary connector there's no easy way
of checking it with a generic supply :-(

Sounds bad?

Since you say the light flickers before a disk is inserted, my guess
would be that the power supply is bad. That's probably easier to
replace than the drive.

Thanks for your message. Actually the only reason I wanted to use the
drive was to erase the five spare disks that I have (some of them have
contain confidential data) before selling all of it , so buying a new
power supply wouldn't make sense.

Oh well it looks like I'll just trash all of it
